October 22, 1804

Double Ditch village

During the night at present Mandan, North Dakota, Clark has a bout of rheumatism, and their French trapper guests catch several large beavers. During the day, they meet a group of Lakota Sioux on a raid and the hunters do well. They end the day three miles above the abandoned Mandan village of Double Ditch.

The hunters killed a buffalow bull, they Say out of about 300 buffalow which they Saw, they did not See one Cow.
